About Us

Gliptone Leathercare UK markets products into all major leather markets under the Liquid Leather brand name – for cars, furniture, motorcycle clothing, bags, boots and cases. Gliptone leathercare products were the original products sold by World of Leather, Kingsbury Interiors, Harveys, Courts, Furnitureland, Pendragon Furniture, Fraylings Land of Leather, Yarwoods Leather and the Co-op. Today, we still supply more furniture manufacturers than any other company in the UK, including the largest and some of the most specialised furniture retailers – companies who put quality and results before price.

AutoMate Product Range

The AutoMate car care range has been developed by a dedicated team of experts, and is carefully produced in the UK to exacting standards in order to create a truly exceptional product range using top quality ingredients and blends.

The AutoMate Bodywork range is comprised of AutoMate Bodywork Shampoo and various car waxes and polishes. These products both clean and protect vehicles. The AutoMate Colour Refresh Polish restores car, motorbike, motor home, caravan and any other vehicle’s paintwork to its former glory.

Our AutoMate Interior range includes everything you need to clean and condition the interior surfaces of your car. With leather cleaners, leather conditioners, carpet and fabric shampoos as well as a cleaner for your dashboard and other trim, all your needs are met.

The AutoMate Specialist products add the finishing touch – this is where car cleaning meets car detailing, and AutoMate covers it all. Whether using AutoMate’s Acid Free Wheel Cleaner, Tyre Dressing or Rainguard Glass Cleaner, AutoMate’s Specialist range will make the wheels, tyres and glass on any vehicle look like they just left the showroom.

Our History

Gliptone’s experience with leather goes back to 1972 when we were re-trimming Classic cars as well as carrying out general trim leather repairs to modern cars. Soon leather recolouring was a major part of the business, however, the products available had many deficiencies. They were very thin or too thick and being solvent based, extremely smelly. We knew we could do better!

Liquid Leather was developed. As far as we know, the first UK water-based system for old leather restoration. World of Leather approached us to develop a range of leathercare products for their various leather suites which we did, then supplied furniture manufacturers like Pendragon in Bridgend, Frayling and Chapel, Contour, Saxon, G Plan, before other major retailers came on board such as Courts, Furnitureland, Kingsbury Interiors and Land of Leather.

Suites being big and bulky are difficult to store, transport and deliver into peoples’ homes and minor transit damage is a costly problem. For this reason, Frayling Furniture asked us to develop a “one touch” leather recolouring product to touch in these light scratches and transit scuffs. They specifically wanted a water-based product that was quick and simple to use, requiring no top coat sealant. SCUFFMaster was born – the first water-based, self-sealing leather dye in the world! We now stock thousands of leather colour dyes, all copied from original leather colour samples. Our stock of car leather colours range from the 1930s up to brand new cars, whilst our colossal range of leather furniture colours has been built up over the last 20 or so years.

In the early 90’s the EEC decided that certain products should be tested to make sure that they are suitable for the market into which they are sold. Motorcycle leathers are designed to protect a rider in case of an accident, however many looked good but offered little body protection. The EEC targeted these for testing, many of which failed and had to be sold as ‘fashion’ leathers. They also tested leather aftercare products for motorcycle leathers and only Gliptone products passed with flying colours. We were tested because most of the ‘made to measure’ manufactures recommended our products, including BKS, Crowtree, MJK and Branded leathers (two have since closed down but the remaining still sell Liquid Leather products). Gliptone Liquid Leather repair was also the only aftercare product proved NOT to reduce the strength of a motorcycle leather suit.

Trusted Products from the Industry Leader

Gliptone Leathercare has been at the forefront of innovative leather repair and leather care products for many years, and we have constantly gone against tradition in producing our products and been proved right. Our products are often copied and one thing can be certain when purchasing a Gliptone product, IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS IT WILL DO – no exaggerated claims or false promises – and backed up with excellent service and knowledge.

Gliptone and the Trade

A major part of any service business is travelling time. With technicians having to visit many homes in a day, long travelling times leave little time for the repair. Our SCUFFmaster ready mixed dyes are the obvious choice for any service company, whereby the technician has the colour already mixed before the visit, meaning he has more time to concentrate on performing an invisible and effective repair. Major retailers like DFS, Furniture Village, CSL, Brighthouse, SCS, Reids, national service companies and dozens of independent service companies use our SCUFFmaster dyes and/or our vast range of cosmetic repair products on a daily basis.

Supplying Manufacturers Worldwide

It’s not only UK companies that use Gliptone Leathercare products – we supply manufacturers in Eastern Europe and Asia with leather care, leather restoration and leather repair materials, whilst our products are also used by airlines, boat manufacturers and equestrian linked businesses. We also export to many other countries all over the world.
